Vein Health - Specifics

According to statistics, approximately forty five percent of women and twenty percent of men begin to experience vein health problems by the age of thirty. By age fifty this ratio increases to the tune of sixty five percent of women to that of forty two percent of men, who complain about some form of varicose vein problems, which is a leg vein.

Along with age, the other factors contributing to this particular condition in men and women, is the loss of tissue tone, loss of muscle mass and the weakening of the venous walls. Additional factors like obesity, pregnancy and childbirth, regular heavy lifting, straining on the toilet and standing for long periods of time can contribute towards extra strain on the leg vein resulting in varicose vein. Problems in the larger varicose veins in the leg means that the deeper valve is defective, making the problem serious enough to require immediate medical attention, or, in some cases even surgery. When these valves are defective, they either close partially or do not close at all causing a feeling of heaviness, a sensation of tension, restlessness in the legs and edema which means swelling. This swelling, or as known as varicose vein, occurs when the defunct valves cause the blood to pool in the larger veins causing these veins to swell against the skin. Normally, a healthy psychological response, blood clotting in such a situation can become life threatening.

A few precautions taken in the dietary habits and a few changes in the unhealthy lifestyle of an individual can greatly influence the vein health of the leg vein. A low salt or a completely salt-less diet can prevent swelling. A regular exercise regime coupled with healthy eating habits consisting of low oil foods, green and fresh vegetables and fresh fruits can help an individual in not only loosing excess weight but also improve vein health.

Standing for long periods of time must be avoided, legs elevated while resting and wearing tight fitting clothes must also be avoided. Along with all these body regime must be regulated by increasing the intake of fibrous foods. In case an individual is already suffering from varicose vein resulting in blood clot on the leg vein, then smoking can aggravate this condition. Until very recently, there was no way an affected varicose vein could be restored to complete competency. However, in recent times, medical science can offer surgery as an option.
