Varicose veins are caused by swollen or enlarged blood
vessels which happen due to the weakening in the vein wall or
valves. Varicose veins are located deeper than the spider veins
and the affected area can look swollen and blue. Varicose veins
can be serious as this condition is associated with the
development of Phlebitis, which is the inflammation of the
vein, thrombosis, occurs when the affected vein starts forming
blood clots or venous stasis ulcers, an ulcer that is formed in
the vein due to improper drainage of the enlarged vein.
Varicose vein mostly affects the leg. On the other hand, spider
veins can affect the face and legs. Spider vein is caused by
the dilation of a small group of blood vessels near the skin's
surface. Spider vein appears red, blue or purple and often
looks like a web or sometimes even forms a linear pattern.
Spider vein treatment is often taken for cosmetic reasons,
although, a person suffering from spider vein can experience
pain and restlessness of the leg.
Treatment of spider vein can depend on the age, overall
health and the medical history of the individual, the extent of
the condition, individual tolerance to certain kinds of
medication and individual preference. There are various
treatments for spider vein like sclerotherapy, ambulatory
phlebectomy, electrodessication, surgical ligation and
stripping and laser vein removal and intense pulse light
therapy. Out of all these, removal vein treatments are done by
laser vein removal where the abnormal veins are destroyed using
a high intensity laser beam or intense pulsating light. The
surgical ligation and stripping procedure involves the surgeon
making an incision in the skin and either removing or tying up
the blood vessel. However treatment for spider vein can give
rise to complications like pigmentation changes wherein
brownish patches may appear near the treated area, allergic
reaction and scarring from the injected chemical solution or in
more serious cases, treatment for spider vein may cause blood
clots in the vein. Removal vein procedure for spider vein
through laser vein removal may be painless but can give rise to
complications stated above.
